Anubis was the jackal-headed god in the Egyptian pantheon of deities. He was born from the union of the goddess Nephtys and the god Ra. In primitive ancient Egypt Anubis was just the "jackal god" and was associated with the dead because the jackal was always seen prowling around the cemeteries and tombs. He quickly grew into the gaurdian and guide for the dead in the underworld or "amenti". His cults were many during Egyptian history. At times he was looked upon to be as powerful as Osiris who ruled the underworld. Anubis was also the patron god of embalmers and mummification rites. Statues of Anubis were often found guarding the doors of Egyptian tombs. The above listed item is from the Third Intermediate Period(1075-332 B.C.E.). This Anubis is depicted in mummiform with two Babi gods, eye of Horus and fainlty visible Ankh. This type of Anubis was entombed with the deceased and blessed by an ancient Egyptian priest as a veneration figure to guide the soul in the afterlife. It is intact, has slight surface age wear and is covered with an ancient brown patina. The above listed item is from the Third Intermediate Period (1075-715 B.C.E.). This incredible "Mummiform Anubis" was cast from clay and was covered with blue green faience glaze. We acquired this item from a very large private collection in Luxor, Egypt. The front has a very visible inscribed row of hieroglyphics and it has retained most of its beautiful faience glaze! This type of figurine was usually placed in the tomb of the deceased. The piece is intact with age wear. The reason for the item being available is due to the vast extent of old archeological findings, thousands of years in Egyptian burials and also the proliferation of these said items in private collections worldwide.
